🔵 In this century, the twin processes of urbanisation and climate change are driving increased risks worldwide, but particularly within Asian cities. Identifying these risks to cities and urban systems – in particular, the climate hazards, societal and sectoral exposure, and associated key vulnerabilities – are an essential challenge towards determining urban responses that enhance policies that expand the adaptation and mitigation spaces that urban policymaking requires in a warming world.
🔵 This talk examines how urban climate risks – of the singular, compound and cascading variety – are affecting current climate adaptation and mitigation approaches, and will examine these in the context of the city-state of Singapore.
🔵 In particular, two questions will be addressed:
(i) how do risks arising from a warmer world result in a methodical, science-based, and technocratic response of developing a whole-of-government "green" plan (the "Singapore Green Plan 2030") of reducing these risks, and;
(ii) are there alternate approaches that can enhance this plan, or reduce its efficacy in the Singapore context?
