Webinar Series on Global Sustainability ★ Health - Environmental Threats to Children

It is well known children are not small adults. From an environmental health point of view, this is especially true. Children are especially susceptible to environmental insults, including exposures from placenta, milk, food, water, skin, and air.

Early onset conditions like atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis are highly related to indoor and ambient environment. From indoors, dust mite, animal dander, and mold growth are important allergens. Air pollutants are known to trigger asthma attacks. They are also related to occurrence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. A ubiquitous group of chemicals, the plasticizers, are also related to asthma occurrence. In addition, congenital anomalies can be linked to air pollutants when the fetus was exposed during critical periods in gestation.

Among highly exposed children, many other conditions have been documented. In central Taiwan, exposure to dioxin-like chemicals occurred in 1979, due to accidental consumption of contaminated rice oil. Children born to exposed mothers had pigmented skin, reduced growth, reduced intelligent quotient (IQ), increased middle ear infection, hearing loss, and disturbance in hormones. When the male children were 16 to 20 years of age, they were found to have worse semen quality, and feminized hormones. Changes in DNA methylation were found which might be responsible for some of the health effects documented.

Protection of our children from environmental threats requires knowledge of potential adverse effects of environmental exposure to children, sensitivity to potentially environmental effects, and determination as a whole to protect our next generation.
