Webinar Series on Global Sustainability ★ Health - Green buildings and resident health: A case study of Boston public housing

We know that many building attributes, including design, condition, and the presence of emissions sources will determine indoor pollutant concentrations. Some of the clearest evidence on the role that design can play is from the limited number of studies that tracked families as they transitioned into homes with attributes specifically designed to mitigate certain exposures or studies that compared differences between such groups. For example, the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) has redeveloped several properties according to ‘green’ standards. This redevelopment was coupled with housing design and policy changes supported by previous housing intervention research, and included a change from gas to electric stoves, implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and a prohibition on smoking indoors. This talk will focus on the improvements to environmental exposures and occupant health associated with these changes. We see that green building techniques offer opportunities to save resources and energy while improving health.
